My heart of art has been broken for several, several years. I desperately wanted to start the healing process but needed to do so cautiously. I figured I should start with some basics: a canvas, a brush, and some paint. Not too scary, right? As I tentatively approached the shallow end of the proverbial art pool, I began working with a technique using semi-strategically placed strokes and varying amounts of pressure while avoiding putting pressure on myself to produce something of epic proportions. I just wanted to enjoy the art for art's sake, view the works without pre-requisite impressions, and allow myself to get lost in the unintentional details.
Starting the healing process with this technique allowed me to simply observe and review the way paint interacts with me and the surface of the canvas. After successfully testing the waters and seeing the results of this exploratory venture, I was reminded of why I wanted to be an artist in the first place. For me, being an artist is instinctual and sustaining. It’s successfully finding that one snack that satisfies an unidentifiable craving. It’s being greeted by an overly excited four-legged friend when you get home from a hard day. It’s finally understanding who you’re meant to be, having no idea how to get there, yet still running in that direction with elated abandon.
